How Digital Divide affects Indigent Community

Sphere, Seesaw, Imbalance, Horizontal, Contrasts, Comparison

Those were the days in the Philippines when people couldn't watch in their own homes and go to their neighbors to watch their tv, when other people had to pay for playing/using a computer per minute, when others had to borrow a radio to get some news and many more. By saying these facts, I realize that some areas need convenient access to modern technology. But unfortunately, we don't have equal opportunities for everyone. According to Merriam-Webster Digital Divide is the economic, educational, and social inequalities between those who have computers and online access and those who do not. (Wolske,2022) Up to this day, society is still experiencing these unfortunate events, even with the government's help. It affects the younger generation and the less fortunate.

Youngmoo Kim delivered that equal economic opportunity through technology widened the divide impacting everyone who lacks socioeconomic privilege. (Kim, 2019) I agree that rising technology benefits a range of people, but it also affects unemployment rates, education for poverty, income on households, un-skilled, etc., which becomes a global problem. It will continuously impact the economy no matter what terms.

Can Providing Data Online be Harmful to our own identity?

Pensive young Caucasian mom and small daughter look at laptop screen think of internet problem solution on gadget. Thoughtful mother and little girl child work use computer, study online at home.

I must admit internet is favorable to everyone, but unfortunately, there are harmful situations that might affect us. Honestly, I’m scared of providing my data on some sites, and we all know they get our information because we provide them. Or maybe it’s our fault after all? But I don't want to conclude anything. I just don't want my identity to be mislead. Of course, they all know about our important information, including my SSN, bank account, etc. Because at some point, we usually do some online shopping or play games which we typically provide our data. In the TEDx talks video, Rose explained that society thinks our data is private, but it is sold or hacked by companies and available on the public or dark web. We don't have any clue what information has been sold. Unfortunately, there are no legal grounds to transfer or sell information. (Barker, 2018) Hearing all of that made me cautious about providing my data online. Especially with my auntie, who I live with. I’m worried that others might manipulate her by calling and believing that she knows her through all the information they might say. I always remind her to be aware of scams. My auntie and I make sure to build our communication openly because we only have each other’s in United States. We don’t want technology to interrupt our relationship. Especially when we are bonding together. When Winner said on how new technology become much more problematic when regarding to social relationships. (Wolske, 2022) He is surely correct. It’s really a problem in our society. When  my friends and I hang out, we try as much as possible not to use our mobile phones to enjoy the moment and build stronger friendship. I also slowly moving away from social media sites because of negativity that affects me.

The Importance of Universal Design in Modern Technology

illustration of four people with disabilities and respective symbols

The development of our world is rising, including technology that's been evolving and new machines or products also being created. With all the progress, society benefited and has done a great extent of things and explored new elements. Theresa mentioned that we should make an overall design for more individuals with diverse needs so that they can access the materials and many places to discover. (Theresa, 2018) We should offer more opportunities in education and products that will be efficient for everyone, especially in some environments in transportation, school, agencies, and a lot more. The significance of universal design is to give accessibility to all levels to do things their way and live comfortably, which society deserves. In relation to that, how cultural diversity will engage in the development of designs and solutions. How can we encounter a safe and understandable life in terms of languages. Martin explained, "Whose Culture has Capital?" Tara Yosso emphasizes the importance of focusing on and learning from "the array of cultural knowledge, skills, abilities, and contacts possessed by socially marginalized groups that often go unrecognized and unacknowledged" brought forward by communities of color."(Wolske, 2020) It is important to recognize different cultural needs in this diverse country. For example, we should construct a context in the structural buildings where English is not the only language in signage but also other dialects, etc. It will be a big help to minorities and everyone who has a language barrier.

Planning is an Effective Way of Balancing Career and Educational Success.

As a working student, balancing work and studies can sometimes be challenging. Planning is the perfect way to manage your schedule on time. But what are the ways that can help us practice and master effective planning? “Practice discipline indicates monitoring your time and documenting every responsibility. While Practice proactivity by preparing for class and planning a large project. Lastly, Practice balance is considered less important or urgent than others.” (Megan Stone, 2014) I highly recommend these ways to be productive and to complete responsibilities more healthily. Also, ownership is a big part of my work-study balance life. It allows me to develop my skills to adapt better study strategies and more efficient ways of doing my to-do tasks.

In the video Finding Balance at Medical School by Alphie Yip, he explains a diagram on how to make your balance life work by Studying, socializing, and getting enough sleep. I've learned that you must be consistent with your mindset, habits, and efforts to achieve your goals. Work smart in a way that is efficient with your time and removes distractions so that you can focus on what you're learning. Overall, after having a tiring day of school and work. I always want to ensure I have time for my social life. No matter how busy I am.
